Ashok Balasubramanyam, M.D.
Dr. Ashok Balasubramanyam is Chief of the Endocrine Service at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston. He is also a professor of medicine and molecular and cellular biology, director of the Endocrine Fellowship Training program, and a faculty member of the translational biology and molecular medicine graduate program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Balasubramanyam specializes in endocrinology and has been practicing medicine and performing medical research for more than 25 years. His numerous awards include the 2009 John P. McGovern Award for pre-clinical sciences, and the 2008 American Diabetes Association Southwest Region Physician-Scientist of the year. His major research interests include ketosis-prone diabetes, lipodystrophy, and myogenesis and insulin action. His professional affiliations include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Balasubramanyam graduated cum laude from Yale University and received his medical degree from St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston followed by an Endocrinology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
